Finding the Right Fit: Gen Woo’s Guide to Kids' Size Charts

Gen Woo’s Guide to Kids Size Charts

Rather than buying endless ill-fitting kids' clothes online, shop for your child's correct size by understanding kids’ size charts and conversions. A young girl measuring herself against a pink wall. (Adobe Stock / Pixel-Shot)

Are you tired of endless returns and frustrating online shopping experiences? Whether you're shopping for your little ones or bigger ones, shopping for kids' clothes can be a real nightmare. Kids grow up fast, and it gets tricky trying to monitor their current children's clothes size because they keep growing! It also doesn't help that there is no required universal children's clothing size guide that all clothing manufacturers and retailers must follow.

When it comes to finding the right fit, it's far better to consider your child's height and weight than simply relying on age. However, the best way to ensure an accurate fit is by taking measurements of your child's body. You may then refer to a size chart to know the corresponding clothing size to your child's measurements.

Different Countries Size Charts

US sizes, along with UK and Australian clothing sizes, are traditionally based on age. On the other hand, Japan and the rest of Europe have sizing guides based on height. International size conversions are merely approximations as apparel companies tend to make clothes based on their own version of standard sizing.

Gen Woo Kids Size Guide

At Gen Woo, we like to cater for everyone, big and small, so we offer a baby range (newborn to 36 months), a girls' and boys' range (2 to 12 years), and a teens' range (13 to 16 years). Some styles are more suitable for younger children, while others work better for older children, and our size range reflects this.

To ensure our clothes are just right, we offer a single-age size (4 years, 5 years etc.) on fit-critical styles and dual sizes (0-3 months etc.) on clothes where there's a little wiggle room.

Children aren't the easiest creatures to dress at the best of times, so we've included some neat, little innovations to make this task a little easier. For babies that won't sit still, we've added inside leg poppers and shoulder openings—lifesavers come nappy changing time! And, so you can keep up with older children (and their growth spurts), we've put elasticated waistbands and adjustable straps in some of our clothes to help them last that little bit longer.

How to measure

The first step to understanding your children’s clothing size is taking accurate body measurements, which may differ depending on the type of garment you wish to purchase. All you need is a tape measure and the simple steps below.

  1. Height: Measure from the top of the head to the ground.
  2. Waist: Measure the natural waistline (find it by tipping to the side like a teapot). We promise we're not just saying that to make you look silly.
  3. Chest: Put their arms in the air like they just don't care… and then measure under them, around the fullest part of the chest.
  4. Hip: Measure around the fullest part of the bottom.

As Gen Woo is a Singapore-based fashion brand, we thought long and hard about how we could cater to both the Western and Asian markets. To compromise, we decided to use a European grading for our clothing. We are a little smaller than UK brands, such as Marks & Spencers and a little bigger than local Asian brands, including Love Bonito. Just think along the lines of Zara or Mango—and that's us.

As an independent fashion brand that cares deeply for our customers, we aim to help you find the best fit for every piece of clothing available. Our clothing is manufactured using EU sizing, and our easy-to-use Size Guide is designed to make shopping for kids' clothing as easy as 1, 2, 3.
