Trending Clothes For Teenagers
Stuck in a rut shopping for your teenager? Here’s the lowdown on the latest Gen Z fashion trends, from skater street style to retro tank tops, and the latest sporty athleisure trends, here at Gen Woo.
The Skater Trend
Few other sports have created a global fashion phenomenon quite like skateboarding. Since the 70s, the way skaters dress has played a major role in shaping modern youth culture and even mainstream fashion around the world today. You can read more about the influence of skateboarding on fashion in our interview with local Singaporean skater Lucy.
Nowadays, skate fashion is as diverse as the skaters themselves. Skateboarding has arguably grown so large around the world that skaters in different countries and even different cities may tend towards certain fashion styles, making modern skater trends more diverse than ever.
One of the best things about skateboarding is it embraces creativity and encourages your teenager to be there own unique self. That simple means, if they think something looks cool – then it does! The fact that skaters bring new styles and trends to their scene is what makes it so cool, and it means the fashion around the sport continues to evolve.
Right now, the baggy style of the 90s has returned with a modern twist. Today's skater might mix oversized t-shirts with bulky shoes and baggy jeans. Others go for a hipster look, with vintage clothes, neutral colours and low profile footwear.
The Athleisure Trend
The 2020s so far have shown us just how comfy street style can really be, without compromising on style. The latest Gen Z fashion trends are certainly no exception, with athleisure silhouettes and skater street-style casuals working their way into the trend cycle just in time for summer.
The term athleisure describes the marriage of athletic gear and leisure wear. On the catwalk, athleisure usually combines loungewear (think sweatpants, hoodies and trainers) with blazers, dresses or heels. Think Rhianna or Kim Kardashian and you've got the look.
Today's athleisure is comfortable but elevated. Sporty, but not in an 'I-just-worked-out-at-the-gym' kind of way. It isn't lazy or haphazard, it's deliberate but at the same time, feels effortless.
For a more wearable day-to-day look for teenagers, athleisure is the perfect trend - it provides a comfortable but stylish aesthetic. It's a way to dress to feel your best. It's a lifestyle choice as much as a fashion statement.
Back To The ‘70s
Retro workout clothes are having a moment. Sweat material and loose jersey cottons are all the rage, combining cosy comfort with lightweight breathability. This look combines all the funky, bright elements of a vintage skater style with a timeless, stripped back feel.
Think California cool with a hint of Bali beaches and try a retro athletic look. Our deep wisteria purple set is the ideal base for a cool teen look with a nod to playful adolescence.
Just as the 1970s favoured a more laidback feel in the athleisure department, this season’s take on the trend references subtle retro elements through its contrast piping, racerback cuts and co-ordinating sets.
Tops for teens and tops for children can often feel miles apart. This classic style of retro tank top feels comfortable and age-appropriate from junior right up to adult, making it an easy firm favourite across the board.
The ‘70s cuts, whilst timeless in and of themselves, can be easily modernised with a simple change of hue, so make sure to choose wisely. Our trendy teal blue set pairs perfectly with chunky sneakers or sandals for an effortlessly cool feel.
The Retro Skort
Popular in the 1960s and 70s and again now, the skort (a combination of shorts and skirt) allows women to define their own standards of femininity. Whatever your teens' activity, however they want to move their body, a skort is practical and good-looking.
Check out street skater Lucy, pictured here with her longboard in downtown Singapore wearing our Begonia Pink Pleated Twill Girls Skort. The skirt's outer layer with shorts underlayer creates a versatile, trendy look for any occasion. Crafted from 100% organic BCI cotton, pair it with a classic tee and trainers for an ultra-soft, lightweight style that keeps up with her fast pace.
The Washed Bermuda Shorts
A classic pair of longline sweat-pant shorts are perfect for the skatepark and are very much a key trend in shorts this summer. Team our washed-out knee-length black Bermudas with a loose-fit tee, high socks and low profile skate shoes to create a perfectly on-trend skater look for your active teen.
We can’t see these styles going out of ours or our teen’s wardrobe rotations for a long while yet, that’s for sure.
Stay Groovy ✌️
